South Kent Golf Reclaims Competitive Spotlight

With the Cardinals competing head-to-head against some of New England’s most elite prep schools—including Brunswick, Taft, Avon Old Farms, Canterbury, Trinity-Pawling, and Millbrook, the 2024–2025 season marked a full and triumphant return for South Kent School’s Prep Golf Program, This spring wasn’t just a season; it was the beginning of a bold new era for golf at South Kent.

From first-time players in our “Find Your Swing” program to NCAA bound student-athletes, this athletically talented group of students were instrumental in laying a solid foundation for the building a top New England Prep Golf program. 

For many, golf was a “second” sport (#SKSPrepHockey), but their access to elite developmental resources fueled their passion for improvement, competition, and a lifelong love of the game.

Varsity Highlights

Luca Alderson ’25 (Captain)

A multi-sport standout, Luca made South Kent history this season as the School’s first NCAA Division I golf commit, heading to Chicago State University. His natural ability and sharp course awareness were instrumental in this season’s success, along with elevating the future prospects of the program.  

Nick Kasick ’25

Primarily a hockey player, Nick’s transformation into a reliable golf competitor was driven by a fierce desire to improve, and willingness to put in the time and focus on the course.  He delivered consistent rounds all season, and proved a steady presence at the varsity level. 

Thomas Bailey ’25

Thomas Bailey brought a hockey player’s grit to the golf course – always ready to work, eager to improve, and do whatever the team needed. His relentless attitude and coachable spirit was greatly appreciated. When called upon, Thomas always stepped up with steady play and tireless effort. 

Benson Grande ’26 (Captain), Alec Stone ’26, Anthony Hurley ’26, Reggie Taylor ’26, and Charlie Griffith ’27 also made consistent and meaningful contributions to the varsity team’s growth. Their passion, consistency, and leadership are already shaping the program’s future.

Historic JV Revival & ‘Find Your Swing’ Breakthroughs

  • This season also marked a historic milestone: South Kent’s first JV golf match in over a decade. That milestone was made possible by the success of the “Find Your Swing” program, designed to introduce golf fundamentals to new players, rapidly accelerating their readiness for competition.

Bennett Law ’25

A hockey player who picked up clubs for the first time this season, Bennett trained daily and capped his development with an impressive score of 47 in South Kent’s first JV match in over a decade.

Trey Luzey (Postgrad)

Beginning in Find Your Swing, Trey quickly rose through the ranks and delivered a sub-50 round in his debut JV match—an extraordinary testament to hard work and adaptability.

Tres Luzey (Postgrad), Bennett Law ’25, Andrew Mohesky ’26, Yuri Nechyporenko ’26, Frank Fan ’27, and Carson Ferdinand ’27 all earned JV certificates, demonstrating growth, resilience, and team spirit.

South Kent’s High Performance development is backed by a suite of premier training assets, including:

  • 300-yard driving range with premium turf and target variability
  • 9-hole on-campus Short Course, doubling as an elite iron-play range
  • Golf Garage program headquarters, featuring indoor putting studio and swing analysis technology
  • Exclusive membership access to The Club at River Oaks, a private 18-hole championship course in Sherman, CT.

These facilities, paired with strong mentorship and a culture rooted in discipline, give student-athletes the tools they need to grow—regardless of where they start.

This season solidified the message that’s been quietly building: South Kent Golf is rising. What began as a developmental effort has become a movement—of hard work, self-belief, and measurable results.

From NCAA commits to first-time players, from prep competition to historic JV wins, the 2024–2025 season proves one thing above all: the future of South Kent Golf is in excellent hands.

South Kent’s golf tradition continues to rise, thanks in part to alumni like Will Whittaker ’21, now a four-year starter and team captain at Hamilton College. A NESCAC Champion and NCAA Championship qualifier, Will’s path from the Hillside to collegiate competition exemplifies the program’s long-term potential. This year, he earned All-NESCAC Second Team honors and helped anchor South Kent’s reputation for developing scholar-athletes.
